afrikan-centered-education:

The traditional justice system of the Acholi people, known as Mato Oput, is a system that encourages forgiveness and reconciliation. In this system, imprisonment and capital punishment were unknown because of the value placed on human life. The Acholis preferred to rehabilitate the offender, rather than isolate or execute him or her. Certain crimes Mato Oput cannot be applied to, such as cannibalism, gang rape, and incest. The reason for this is that these crimes were mostly unknown in traditional Acholi society. They usually appeared in folklore and were attributed to the Ogre because such crimes went beyond human understanding. Much like the situation in Rwanda (mentioned previously), Ugandans realized that the Western justice was inadequate for healing their nation following the terrible war crimes committed by the Lord’s Resistance Army.
